XP Shutting off Right After Starting

Hi,

I am not a computer guru, but I play one at work. Somehow just because I
know a little about some things I have been annointed. This web site is my
savior.

My boss brought in his laptop this morning and wants me to try to "fix" it.
What is happening is that when you push the power on button, it goes through
start up and then immediately logs off. Then the "saving your settings"
pop-up seems to be frozen on the screen. Anyone have any idea what this is
all about? Thanks

Could be any number of 'things' causing the shutdown. Can the system be
booted to Safe Mode ?

Click the General Discussion link in the left frame if the system boots
to Safe Mode
Click the Hardware link if it will not
