I started the download from the AU globe 7 1/2 hours ago, and I have no
indication as to whether it's progressing or how close it is to being done.
So, I'd like to stop it and just get the download from the Download center -
how do I stop the AU download that's going on now? Or do I not need to stop
it - can I just go ahead and get it from the download center? What will
happen when the AU download is finished?

Microsoft is limiting the daily number of SP-2 downloads.
You may get SP-2 soon or you can wait days. For more
information, see FAQ #7:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm

If you want to cancel it, perhaps turn off AU or double
click the ICON in the Notification area and see if you
can cancel it that way.

If you decide to continue the download through WU, once
it's ready to install, it should notify you and you will
have to accept the Licence Agreement etc before
installation. (I would suggest the Custom installation so
you can see what is installing).

If you decide to abort the download, I suggest that you
clean out the temporary download folder prior to
installing SP2:

Click Start, select run
Type in:
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

and then download the full pack here (sorry the links
have wrapped)

Windows XP Service Pack 2

or alternatively

dorder/en_us/default.mspx
Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
