XP SP 2 updates not installing

Hi;
I just recently re-installed Windows XP Home on my HP laptop and upgraded
that to Windows XP Professional, as trying to install Pro directly kept
coming up with a blue screen. My updates were working the entire time after I
completed installing Home, then when I installed Pro, I can no longer get
updates, either PRIORITY or CUSTOM. When I do, the specs on the ready to
install page say: 79 updates, 0Kbs, 0 Min (Download; ready to install)
Estimated time at your connection speed; 0 Mins, (Download size(total)
0Kb)Then I get: Some units were not Installed, The following updates were not
installed-all 79. Why are all of the amounts reading 0??
Finally, I get:Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates
from being downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates
again. If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.
I did those things with no results. I also ran Microsoft Genuine Advantage
Diagnostics and everything passed. Then I ran Registry Mechanic, and it found
a number of problems that it corrected, but I still can't install any Windows
updates. Please help. Thanks.

Here's what worked for me, ALSO(got from attached site)
Had success with this.

I re-registered the Windows update dll as suggested by the following
post from http://forums.vnunet.com/message.jspa?messageID=870658

Try re-registering the windows update components. This may help fix a
corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,
2. Type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press
Enter.
3. Should get the message "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded"
Click OK.
4. Repeat above for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot

Now try to install your updates.

The updates show as 0 KB when they have been previously downloaded to
the system. Windows Update is detecting their presence in the Download
subfolder of SoftwareDistribution or in one of the transaction logs.
First, show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Next, go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
The Automatic Updates service will stop
Back to Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste]

%windir%\softwaredistribution

Delete ALL of the subfolders of SoftwareDistribution
Close the window
Download and SAVE:
Windows Update Agent 3.0 [x86-32bit]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

KB927891 [x86-32bit]
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A

Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Now install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe and then restart the system

Either initiate a manual visit to Windows Update via the Start Menu link
or from within IE > Tools > Windows Update or, to do it automatically,
Start > Run > type in

wuauclt /detectnow
Click OK or press Enter

Did that fix it ?

Thanks, had the same problem and I searched a great deal today .

Reregistered as outline and Bingo, it worked like a charm--all 84 updates
successfully installed.

Thanks again,
