Been getting this error since April. I have Panda installed but have also
installed the hotfix which is supposed to correct the problem. It doesn't.
I've also removed Panda but the problem persists. Any ideas?

BG_E_NETWORK_DISCONNECTED

The network card is inactive or disconnected. All jobs are placed in the
BG_JOB_STATE_TRANSIENT_ERROR state

Check your Device Manager - is anything disabled/not connected?

The internal network card (which I don't use) was disabled. I enabled it but
it made no difference. The system tray shows the network card as being
unplugged ( a red cross throught it).

Thanks for the tips but already tried those two services to no avail. I've
also been manually downloading the updates but it is a complete pain and very
time consuming.

Windows Update is the one piece of software which really p's me off. The
last time I had this problem I spent about 3 weeks in discussion with an MVP
to get 6 updates installed. Five were fianlly installed using update and the
6th had to be done manually and the root cause of the fault was never sorted
(as I'm now finding out). Does no-one in MS understand how their software
works?

Seems to be a symptom of an environmental issue rather than a problem with WU.

What have you done to try to diagnose the symptom?
