Has anyone figured out how to resolve the conflict
with new XP Windows securiity and Norton Internet
security. When I disable Norton I can use Internet
Explorer fine and get to the Internet. When I enable
Norton (Preferred)and try to turn off XP Security ,
Internet Explorer will not work

Probably on of Microsoft's "accidental" conflicts that will get rid of
competition in another area.

That's their specialty. Incorporate something into Windows that takes the
place of another product, and make it difficult to use said other product,
and other product goes away. Even if the other product actually works, where
Microsoft's replacement doesn't.

I have a similar problem. I have recently installed the
latest version of Norton AntiVirus, and have updated the
virus definitions--but the Windows Security Centre still
indicates that while it recognises that Norton AntiVirus
is installed, its status is unknown. So every time
Windows XP loads, it informs me that my computer could
be "at risk", despite the fact that Norton reports its
status as "OK."

I dont know if this will help but it seems like a different version of the
pre SP2 problem is back where there were two places to turn off the windows
firewall. One worked, one didn't.
I first turned off Windows Security in the Windows Security Center, but
still had some effects of Windows Security running . Didn't hurt my NIS, to
my knowledge but it's still early in the game yet. I had to uncheck
everything on the Windows Firewall Exceptions and Advanced tabs. These seem
to have some effect even with Windows security selected as off.

Matt similar problem for me, however I.E is fine and appears to be okay.

I wouldn't want to be on PAYG dial up to receive SP2 either!

Re "You are at Risk" - it's the same with another antivirus programme I
use. I think it's the fact that SP2 looks a the date of the virus updates on
your PC rather than checking the Symatec or other providers site first and
then comparing it to the definitions date on the PC; which would appear to be
more logical.

I am running Norton Internet Security 2003 (Firewall plus Anti-Virus, turned
off the anti-spam stuff since I consider it to as being very aggressive). I
installed SP2 about 10-14 days ago without seeing your symptoms; although I
DO NOT understand what you mean by "turning off XP Security". Exactly what
did you disable? All I did was disable the XP firewall plus go into options
in Outlook Express and enable it to receive attachments.
You may be your own problem!!

The "popup" problem I do have. Just hang on until Kelly Theriot, Doug Knox,
or someone else devises a "shoot the messenger" script.

Matt;
That is a Norton issue and not Microsoft issue.
Norton has updates the 2004 product line but older versions are not
getting that update so what you see is normal.
You can disable that monitoring option in the Security Center.

Bruce, notice how after installing SP2, there is an additional connection for
LAN on bottom right blue bar along with your connected status icon, even
though you aren't on a network? This thru me and I could not connect to the
internet, until I went in to "show all connections" viewed the properties of
my current connection, and then installed all the other options. I orginally
only had TCP/IP installed. This fixed my problem, although I'm not sure why.
I think it has something to do with that new LAN that comes with SP2. Hope
this makes sense and helps you.
