After reading post after post with tons of prblems attributed to the SP2
update I keep wondering myself Why going through out all this nightmare when
as we stand now I can have a bug's free PC with the proper method.

1. updated antivirus
2. updated anti spyware
3. Good hardware firewall and software firewall
4. Use Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla instead of IE
5. Updated pop-up blocker and antispam settings

Folks! just five of these pieces of software will keep you, well! almsot
100% safe from hackers, worms and bugs.
SP2 is causing too much grief just to be somehow safer from hackers?

Just my two cents for the infamous SP2 update

Bill, You can keep it for now !

SP2 is considered a "Critical Update" and updates over
5 million lines of code in Windows XP. You'll experience
stronger security and a bit more performance by installing SP2.
If you are relying on some negative information about SP2
found in newsgroups, remember that only folks with issues
tend to post and many issues are not even related to SP2.
Additionally, future critical updates will require that SP2 be
installed as a pre-requisite.

You don't think people are going to post compliments about XP do you?
Considering some 100 million users are involved these represent only a minor
percentage of users.

I've been running SP2 since the RC 1 Beta. It's great. The pop-up blocker
alone is worth the download.

The only problem I experienced was with Corel Word Perfect 8 (Word Perfect
12 is the current version). The WP8 problem was solved by running it in
Windows 98 compatibility mode.

As for your suggestions about what software to use, I am sure those choices
would work fine, but I suspect most PC users never even heard of them with
the exception of anti-virus software. Service Pack 2 is mainly directed
toward such users.

The only frustration I feel is that Window's Update says the download may
"take a while". We aren't stupid, you know. Could they be a little more
specific about the process that is taking place and a rough idea of what "a
while" might be. Considering the massive task of updating millions of
computers with a very large package, it's an understandibly difficult job.
But give us users a little credit for some brains and give us information.

I downloaded it and it installed without a single
problem. And it's working fine, with the exception of a
very slow boot after you logon. Takes forever for the
icons to load on the desktop, as well as the bottom right
corner. Otherwise it works great.

I am with Enrique on this one, I have been a Windows developer for over 20
years and I would perfer not to have to set automatic updates on my system.
I guess I will keep it turned off so that I will not be forced fed by you
(Microsoft) and will install SP2 if and when I feel like it.

Depending on your circumstances, #7 on this link may help explain it:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/hang0.htm

"take a while"
How long is a while?
Is your computer completely un to date with ALL Critical Updates, then
SP-2 will probably be less than 60mb.
If you have none of the updates, SP-2 will be closer to 200mb.
Points in-between if you have some patches.

Then how fast is your internet connection at the time download is on.
This changes daily or more for many.

These go to make an accurate prediction nearly impossible.

High speed internet about 20 minutes to download.
Dial-up could be a day or two if you need 200mb.

I apologize, I should have included more information myself. I have DSL
(always on) and am current on all updates. I clicked "download now" and so
far have seen no indication of anything happening except for some Hotfix SP2
programs in my "Add/Remove programs" list. That was yesterday evening (8/19).
I have not been asked to install anything and have not had any error
messages concerning hangs or other problems.
Thank you.
