XP SP2 blocks PDF files

Ever since installing SP2 over Win XP Pro I can no longer
open locally-stored PDF files in my browser. For example,
if I create an HTML document and link to a PDF file on my
hard drive, it will not open and instead I get a security
warning and an image placeholder that displays in the
upper left corner. This occurs even though I select the
option to "allow blocked content" when prompted by the
Information Bar.

What's strange is that SP2 does allow me to launch Acrobat
and open PDF files across the Internet, but not those
stored locally on my hard drive.

A solution would be greatly appreciated.

"Edward",

I am sorry you are running into this issue. While the installation of
Service Pack 2 appears to be a catalyst to the problem, the issue here seems
to be compatibility. Please post this question to the following newsgroup,
as they have people with more experience in this issue and can help you more
quickly. Please do post back the solution, however, when you find it.

Thank you.

microsoft.public.windows.app_compatibility

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I can open all PDF files stored on my PC, and some PDF files from trusted web
sites. However, when I try to open and download PDF files from my bank and
credit union the screen collapses and a driver erros message comes up
Error Message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078) . I
have done everyting recommended in the MS bulletins but to no avail.
