I have set everything up the way Microsoft instructed, selected auto update
(against my better judgement), selected the time to check for updates, and
nothing ever happens. When I check to see what updates (if any) have been
installed I can see all the previous updates, but NO SP2, nothing after Aug
5th, 2004.
(1) What am I doing wrong.
(2) If Microsoft ever reads these comments/requests, why did you screw up
the update system you had before, it's worked well up to now?

Microsoft are restricting the number of downloads so they're not over loaded.
Your time will come!
If it hasn't in a couple of weeks then maybe look to download it manually.

Thanks, it would be nice if they would tell you that. Especially when it
appears that some who have attempted to access SP2 after I did have the
download and I am still waiting. My pc is not on 24 hours a day 7 days a
week.

I think I am in the same boat, I waited a few days before
telling the updater to go ahead and download SP2 since I
figured there'd be a rush early on. After pressing it
though nothing has happened except the automatic updater
doesn't appear in my system tray any more. Can I assume
that I have been scheduled to get it at some time in the
future and is there any way to monitor the progress of my
status? Perhaps there is some registry entry I can check
to confirm that something has happened because for all
appearances nothing has changed.

Not too sure Rob, I'm just going to wait and see. I did get Adaware plus tell
me that a registry setting was being changed by Microsoft but I'm not sure
why.

Microsoft has created a whole new class of addicts, "update addicts". I feel
your pain. I know 'cause I'm going thru withdrawal along with the rest of
you. I need my "update fix" or I may break into Microsoft and steal it.
I guess switching to Linux would be equivalent taking a dose of methadone.

THANK YOU!!!! I have spent the last day scouring through everywhere on
Microsoft.com trying to find something, anything, about how I could discover
what the progress of the update download was after I set it running on the
20th (with a constant connection since...) with no luck aside from "Microsoft
recommends you update as soon as possible...." - usually with my wife having
to tell the kids to cover their ears to my rather boisterous replies.

Gentlemen, you have saved my children from being exposed to more naughty
words. I thank you. Now if only Microsoft had bothered to tell us this!

It appears that the two registry entries that will affect the retry of a
download are:
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/WindowsUpadte/Auto
Update/DownlaodExpirationTime [and same path] NextDetectionTime.
After I changed the expiration time to the past and the next detection to
the near future, I exit regedit and restarted the Automatic Updates Service
through services.msc. This did not work. The registry entries were changed
to a future date and time. I countinue to retry, with no joy. I believe
that it may have something to do with the Microsoft response to the query in
the key: [same path] ODFFileURL [set to]
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/odf/wuodf.xml. When I paste this into
IE address line, I get this response:
- <OperationalDirectives>
<DownloadRegulation AcceptanceRate="100" />
</OperationalDirectives>
I am assuming the this response is keeping my downlaod at check.
If anyone figures out all of the rest of the registry entries in this path
-- which I am assuming were placed there by the new Windows Update v5, please
post them.
