I recently had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system
on my kids' computer due to crashes and probable virus problems. It is an
older Emachines T2482 that came with XP SP1, so I of course had to run
windows update to get the service packs. The first updates for the Windows
Installer 3.1, KB 898461, KB 892130, and KB842773 installed with no problem,
bur when I tried to install SP2, the computer froze not long after the screen
changed from downloading update to installing update. I let it sit for
several hours hoping it would finish, but the power went out. When I next
turned on the computer, I expected to go to the update site agin and start
over, but Windows Update site now shows there are no available updates for my
computer, and Automatic Update is not in the systray as it normally would be
at this point. I had not yet reinstalled the antivirus, because I had been
told that with a freshly reformated harddrive and new install of the OS, I
could put that off till the updates were done, as the AV is supposed to be
disabled during the SP intall. Short of reformatting yet again and starting
all over (I have done this several times in the last year), what can I do to
get this running properly?

Thanks,

KEL2Hall
