XP SP2 Download Failure, error code 80072F78

Hello,

I have seen this error mentioned in this group but it concerns ISA2K, which
I don't have. I have found a link on MS's support page but it says the
error appears when loading the WindowsUpdate page. I don't have any problem
loading up the page, I can get into the site, select the updates I wish to
download and get to the Install button. Here I press the button, the usual
dialog box appears but all the downloads fail. When I check in the Install
History, all the updates have error code 80072F78.

I have opened port 80 and 443 on my router and ZoneAlarm Pro, I have deleted
CatRoot2 and WUTemp folders plus all that I could in the
SoftwareDistribution folder (could not delete 2 BIN files in EventCache or
the ReportingEvents text file

Nothing is working and there are critical updates to download and install
now.

Can anyone help please?

Kol

Hi

Installing KB871260 have solved this problem for several people, you
might want to try it:

An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer versions
5.x and 6.0
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=871260

Hi there,

I am presuming am I downloading the correct file called
"IE6.0-KB871260-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe" from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.
The patch is called Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6
Service Pack 1 for Corporations (871260) and says it's for corporates only,
but I'm on a single PC. it also doesn't say it's for Windows XP SP2. So
when I go to run it it says it requires Internet Explorer 6.0 to be
installed.

I have found another IE 6 SP1 security patch but that says it requires IE 6
SP1 installed. My version of IE is
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158...

Hi

No, that update is not for WinXP SP2.

Let's try something else:

Delete the Internet cache and rename (or delete) the
SoftwareDistribution folder by following the instruction here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en

Please post back any results, good or bad :-)

Will not let me rename the SoftwareD... folder, access denied.

I cannot delete the reportingevents log file.

Hi

Did you stop the Automatic Updates service as the article described?

I tried this (deleting cache/temp files/history and renaming Software
Distribution folder) but, alas, it did not work. I still get 80072f78 error.
I have tried everything possible, including several steps provided by
Microsoft Tech Support. Now they want me to either install a second version
of Windows XP on my hard drive or to erase my hard drive and start over. I
do not like either option. Any other suggestions out there? My computer
works fine otherwise. Only WindowsUpdate does not work and this 80072f78
pops up.

We're getting the same results here (have approximately 30 XP SP2 PCs on our
network all running IE6 128-bit SP2) and since a few weeks ago we cannot get
windows update to install any updates. We can get through the site, can see
which updates we need to install, but as soon as we click on install, the
status bar flies straight across the download screen and comes up with
"failed".

Have tried all solutions relating to the error code in the forums, but
nothing is working. Surely Microsoft must be aware there is an issue with
Windows Update by now. It doesn't seem to relate to which version of IE you
are running or what SP your machine is up to. I suspect there is a rogue
element in one of the previous downloads which has stopped this running. The
last successful download run on the machines are:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (23rd Sept)
Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374) (22nd Sept)
Windows Media Player 10 (22nd Sept)
Nvidia Corporation - Video - NVIDIA Quadro2 EX (22nd Sept)
Update for Windows XP HighMAT Support in CD Writing Wizard (KB831240) (22nd
Sept)
Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 (22nd Sept)

Anyone got any ideas yet?
