XP/SP2 error

I just recently purchased a new Maxtor 300GB HD & I formatted & installed XP
pro. It worked fine until I installed SP2. After I rebooted, I got this error
message: STOP: c0000221 unknown hard error \system root\system32\ntdll.dll.
Can anyone help me figure this one out?? I go into safe mode & uninstall SP2
& reboot then it works fine. It's only after SP2 is installed that I get this
message. I also installed an ATI Radeon 9550 Xtasy video card & a new monitor
at the same time as the hd, but this error only comes up after installing
SP2. Thanx for any help.
