XP SP2 Hangs on Backing up Registry Files

I am trying to install the SP2. However when I try to install, it will hang
as it tries to back up registry files. I have let it run for up to 24 hours
with no further response. -- Thanks for your help

I have the same issue any pointers be helpfull
I ran a registry cleaner to no avail.
