I keep getting a "cant copy file" message when I TRY to install SP2. The file
it cant seem to get a handle on is "tcptest.exe. Now this file is found in
fp40ext.cab on both my original xp cd (and yes...I re-installed my bona-fide
xp from cd), and the extracted update I downloaded from MS. But heres the
kicker......I can extract EVERY FILE in fp40ext.cab, EXCEPT the troubled
file. I cant believe I'm the only slob on this planet to have encountered
this....yet no mention on any microsoft support site I have found. Is anyone
else cursed this way, and if so what did you do.

Perhaps it's a currupted download or a corrupted CD? I'd try downloading it
again or obtaining an alternate source for the media and doing the
installation. If it's on CD then try to copy the entire thing to HDD and
then install it? It's bulky but you can delete it afterwards if you'd like.

One more thing - make sure to disable your AV first and any other "active
scanning" software you might have installed - just in case.

Nice try, and thanks to both Galen and TaurArian, but I actually do have two
sources of the cab file...one which was in the download, one which was on my
original XP cd, tcptest.exe does not extract from either one (while ALL other
files do). Also I have searched my hardrive for this file....no dice. Last
night I downloaded the SP2 AGAIN and intend to try it in case lightning does
strike twice in the same cab file.
I'll let you know what happens

Ok are you guys ready for this? I downloaded another copy of the sp2 form the
microsoft website. Then I disconnected my computer from the internet, then I
rebooted to safe mode and ran the following scans
1. CA inoculate with latest definitions.....No hits..then rebooted (safe
mode), then
2. Spysweeper....latest definitions....some low level hits on tracking
cookies..got rid of em, then ran clean, then
3. Spywear doctor..1 hit...Fresh Bar...deleted, ran clean, then
4. AdAware SE, no hits then
I rebooted to normal mode and ran all the virus checkers again...no hits. So
I proceeded to install, and SAME PROBLEM! So I installed this very same
download on my laptop (also xp sp1) and it worked perfectly.
OK..now took a copy of tcptest.exe, zipped it...sent it to my troubled
machine via email, got on the email got the file and unzipped it with
win-zip, result..no file appeared. So I shared the folder, and looked at it
with my laptop over the network....there it was IN PLAIN VIEW...I COULD EVEN
COPY IT! Back over to my other machine where I ;
1.Checked folder settings to make sure that I wasnt "hiding" the file, no
dice.
2. Checked to make sure I had sufficient privelages...no dice
3. Went to a worthless gif file, changed the extension to exe...I could
still see it
3a. Changed the file name to "billybob", leaving the exe extension...still
seeing it
3b. Changed the name to "tcptest" leaving the exe extension...file
disapeared!!!!
4. Tryed viewing it with a command prompt...no dice
So here is the question, what setting or settings in WXP will cause a file
of a certain name to be hidden....no matter where on the machine it is?

I have this EXACT issue. no clues yet.
extremely odd - have two computers, one can see and execute TCPtest.exe
(Frontpage 4.0 TCP test utility), but then i put on USB or floppy
removeable media and the other machine CANNOT see the file! (using dir
/a)

will keep looking... yes i need the file for the SP2 install as well.

OK, managed to get around the SP2 install by generating a short text
file called TCPTest.ex_, and using this file.

However, i believe the root cause of this behaviour could be an
HClean32.exe infection. i'm working through a tool called
hijackthis.exe to get rid of it.

i would suggest researching this malware and determine whether you have
it installed too : )

hey anstis:
ok heres the deal...windows is "hiding" this file for some reason. What I
done was reboot to safe mode....then I could view the file. Then I looked at
permissions and could find NO reason for it to be hidden! I done NOTHING! I
rebooted to regular mode...then it was there!!! Hell I dont know some kinda
curse, or computer hiccup (oh i forgot computers always are predictable).
Whatever the case i was then able to install SP2....even in normal mode. If
this dont work for you try installing SP2 in safe mode...maybe we should
rename it to "Working mode". BTW I also had a second computer that installed
perfectly...I think this may have something to do with a chunk of
scum...errrr...I mean ADWARE called freshbar whatever that is. good luck and
thanks for the tip on the scumware you found.
