Similar problem with a friend of mine. Not sure why his computer kept
restarting, and it showed up to be a potential hard-drive problem. Either
way, he couldn't boot and he kept restarting. We reinstalled Windows XP
Home, and a few days later after SP2 was installed, same thing. This is what
I did: Put in the XP Install disk, let it search your hardware and load
files. Instead of reinstalling Windows, go to the Recovery Console (the one
where you do all the dirty work...DOS style). There are a few commands in
the HELP section. I tried two or three of them and his computer rebooted
fine. I used the commands that reconstruct the Master Boot Record (might be
FIXMBR or something), and the command that has to do with fixing the
boot-sector of the hard-drive. If you are able to reboot after this,
thoroughly check your hard-drive for bad-sectors...use as many utilities as
you can. I had to use the Windows Scan-Disk in all its glory, and I used the
utility that comes with Western Digital drives. Not sure if his hard-drive
was damaged by the above-mentioned procedure, so it's a good idea to check
the drive just in case. Hope this helps!
