xp sp2 installation failure during file backup

the computer restarts when trying to install sp2 at the point it is backing

This doesn't help I'm afraid. You need to know why the process is just
being abandoned. You could try activating verbose logging for the install
or use my technique of tracing with both RegMon and FileMon to supplement
the logging.

Were there any records in the Event Viewer?
