I installed this update and now Outlook Express doesnt recognize my password.
I've just discovered that my Windows Media Player with all my music files is
now GONE! I have uninstalled this dumb update per Dell's instruction and now
I still cannot access my stuff. Has anyone else had this problem and is it
recoverable????? This is enough to learn MAC and leave the Windows
environment!!!!

Your frustration is felt by thousands of users just like yourself. However,
you must know that the download and installation of Service Pack 2 is your
choice. It is not now, nor has it ever been, a requirement. Further, there
are specific and detailed instructions for preparing your system for the
installation of SP2 on the Windows Update website. These instructions have
also been made available through numerous media outlets. Just about every
computer oriented website and magazine, as well as television show, has the
information regarding Service Pack 2. As Microsoft has made abundantly
clear, the installation of Service Pack 2 is a major update to the operating
system. You install it at your own risk.

That being said, Microsoft has made a huge error in the release of Service
Pack 2. They bear at least half the responsibility for the chaos and mayhem
that SP2 has wrought on the personal computing community. It should never
have been made available to the public. There are numerous third party
applications that are far superior to the security components of Service
Pack 2. Most of them are also free of charge.

Your music files are most likely gone for good. Have you checked the My
Music folder or the folder you have the files saved in to see if they are
still there. Media Player just may have lost the location of the files.
You can set up your email account again in Outlook Express. I am very sorry
that you had problems with Service Pack 2. I hope you can find some good
replies to your post here. These groups are a great resource and there are
some very sharp people in here who can help you. Good luck.

I'm more concerned about OE recognizing my password so I can get into my
email files. Since my system is not telling me "Welcome to Outlook Express,
set up your account", I am figuring that it has not disappeared entirely. I
wonder if editing the registry editor will correct this.

Have you considered restoring the Registry? Had to do that a cople of times
after installing sp2 until I finally got it to work properly. I'm using XP
Home and have sp2 installed and working like a charm. After doing the old
defrag, it runs a lot smoother now.

I have printed the directions for editing the registry, but kind of afraid to
do so. Did you lose what you had in OE when you did it?

When you restore the registry (not edit) you basically roll back your
computers setting to a certain date when all was working well. All your
settings will be there as if nothing happened to it. That is providing you
have such a back-up date (restore point)

I seem to have suffered because of Windows security. I can still find the
listings of my music (in Documents section) but the contents are gone! A
pop-up keeps telling me I cannot open them anyway.Think I'll just get rid of
Windows Security and be done with!!
