this has to be the worst experience of my computing life ( this from the
woman whose puter has been fried more than once by our electricity board !)

havinf given up cancelling all the auto update pop ups that bugged me every
hour/ day/ week - i installed sp2 ----
four hours later having re-configured everything - i still had no broadband
modem - no mouse - no printer and a messed up desktop
I phoned my isp
they told me that sp2 has "known" issues with broadband .. I asked how known

apparently over 75% of the callers they have had since sp2 hit the stand had
problems -- the sp2 DOES NOT support most english broadband modems

the only way that sp2 will support my mouse , printer, scanner and 85% of my
running processes is to install sp2 and download the new drivers -- however
since it does not support my modem i cannot do this -- HELP ...........

the advice i got from my isp, and three puter shops and about 6 technicians
- was " oh no -- not another sp2 problem -- get it off your machine - remove
it - don't think of doing this again" i have now spent nearly all yesterday
and half of last night trying desperatley to correct the damage sp2 caused --
( firewall , antivirus and graphics programs all re-configured, most of my
kid's word docs garbled , and my broad band modem drivers removed ) and now
trying to check all my favourites options in ie, some of which have been now
denied access - because the site is unsupported by the new config. ( not porn
sites or download sites - those i could understand - but this has taken all
the sites i use for home education)

PLease PLeas microsoft don't let these updates lose on us until you have
checked that they actually work!!!!!

You can control this in your IE options.

SP2 works for an enormous number of people. It isn't a trivial update, but
most of the problems experienced by users have to do with device drivers or
underlying problems on the existing WinXP installation. You can uninstall
SP2, download the latest device drivers from your hardware mfr's websites
and store them for safekeeping and try again if you wish. I have never seen
a problem with data corruption post SP2, so that may not be related. If you
install SP2 on a known clean install of XP
