XP/SP2 ok for 2006 SP1 laptop ?

we have discovered that one of our laptops
is running XP/SP1 and was never updated to SP2
BUT has been updating everything else via Windows Update.

So - can we use the old 2004 XP/SP2 upgrade CDrom to update
this "very current" SP1 laptop -
or will the SP2 upgrade CDrom
overlay current modules with older versions ?

Install the SP2 update (either download from MS or if you've got the CD from
MS use it), then when it has upgraded the OS from WinXP SP1 to WinXP SP2, go
to windows update and have it install all the hot fixes that have been
released since SP2 was released - it could be as few as 10 or so or upwards
near 90 depending on what software and OS options are installed on the
PC/Laptop. Go back to the MS Updates site after each reboot until is states
there are no more updates.
