Does anyone know if Windows Update v4 service will remain alive for security
updates to XP SP1 (or 1a) after the release of SP2, and if so, for how long?

TIA

V4 will be around for a long time, I would imagine (if for no other reason than to take care of other, older OS's).
For XP systems, the shortfall of not getting SP2 is that at some point you'll not see new XP-specific fixes on the old site.
My reasoning is: With the release of XP Service Pack 2, any new fixes or updates would be done on that code set and not on the set from SP1.
And that SP2 will be using V5.

Are you planning on holding off on SP2? or ......?

Thanks for your response. As you point out "the shortfall of not getting SP2
is that at some point you'll not see new XP-specific fixes on the old site."
AFAIK the v5 site would only be available if SP2 was installed (but please
correct me if I am wrong) and some of the security patches may well not be
viable if SP2 is not installed.

Yes, I am planning on not installing SP2 straight away. From what I can tell
SP2 for all its security advantages, like the original XP distribution, is
intolerant of badly-behaved software. Also, I have heard that the new
Windows firewall, again for all its advantages, may render my (now
unsupported) software firewall inoperable. I realise that one can turn off
the Windows firewall, but I feel more comfortable at this time having both
ICF and my trusty old software firewall implemented at the same time.

Regards

As long as your XP SP1 is up-to-date with all security updates, you'll be ok ---- until the post-SP2 critical updates begin.

What software firewall are you using?
Using 2 software firewalls is a bit of overkill.

Kerio 2.1.5 - which may gag on SP2. Inbound protection is largely taken care
of by ICF, and Kerio is there primarily to thwart any
unauthorised/unsolicited attempts at outbound connections (none so far!).

Someone has alerted me on another Newsgroup to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=lifesupsps. Having XP Pro SP1
that gives me some reassurance that it might be supported for another two
years after release of SP2. However there is also an opinion out there that
agrees with your reasoning that SP2 will become the current version, and
that is what will be supported.

Looked at that page. By its logic you may have 12 months or 24 months, or until Service Pack 3 is released.
Enough sepculation. I'll try to get an answer from MS, and post back here.

Meantime, what's the deal with Kerio 2.1.5 & SP2?

Raymond,
The answer from a very reliable source is:
Within in a couple of weeks all XP users will be going to the V5 Site regardless if they have SP2 or not.
MS will continue to publish updates for XP RTM, SP1 and SP2 version of Windows XP.

Bottom line: Your XP will be supported .....on V5

Many thanks for checking back with MS. I should think that there are one or
two out there who will be more than interested in their response.

IIRC Kerio MAY not co-exist with the enhanced Windows Firewall. (This -
speculation on my part - may have to do with testing with the SP2
pre-release.) At least one well-respected entity on the grc Newsgroups is
testing the latest release of Kerio for functionality for this reason, and
is having some difficulty getting it to log any suspicious packets. I don't
have that feature switched on in Kerio, and if that is all that is "broken"
in Kerio 2.1.5, that won't bother me. There have also been reports that
Sygate PF is functioning OK with XP SP2, so that may be a possible
alternative. The reason I stuck with Kerio 2.1.5 is that it could function
as an internet gateway for a home network using ICS, and subsequent free
(for personal users) versions of Kerio do not. Again, a router would solve
that problem, but hey, my son already has plenty of end-uses for his Dad's
"spare" cash!
