I have attempted to install SP2 twice now on my Toshiba Satilite Pro 6100
(1.6Ghz, 1 Gig ram, 16 Gig free hardrive space prior to sp2). I'm using the
"clasic" start menu as apposed to the xp start menu. The second time I
followed all the pre install advice I found here including removal of unused
software, spyware checking with addaware & spybot search & destroy, scaned
for virises on the entire system, checkdisk, defrag, disk cleanup. All of the
utilities I used were the latest versions. I also disabled all of the startup
programs I could identify as not required. Also, for good measure, I
uninstalled McAfee prior to attempting sp2.

The result: boot takes around 15 minutes to complete (at least I think it
completes). I then get about 5 seconds of "responsiveness" every 5 to 15
minutes. by this I mean, I click on start, might be able to click on
settings, but then have to wait for the computer to respond. I have managed
to get the control panel up and it seems to be responsive within the control
panel, but as soon as I try to do anything else, its back to click and wait.
Some things such as Start>Shut Down and Start>Run don't seem to ever respond.

The only things that seem to work without hesitation are brining up the task
manager and using Ctrl Alt Del. The task manager shows System idle as the
only thing using the cpu, and memory usage is at 120mb. The hard drive is not
being accessed during the unresponsive time.

I have also disabled both my wired and wireless (via switch on the
computer)networks.

And lastly as mentioned above, I can't get the Start>Shut Down to work so I
have been using Ctrl+Alt+Del to access the shutdown dialog. When I do so it
always indicates that Exploere is not responding.

Any help or advise would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks

Another symptom is that when I try to go to Network Connections I get the
following error message:
"The Network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of network
adaptors on your machine.
Please make sure that the Network Connections service is enabled and running."

I checked and the Network Connections service is enabled and running. There
should be two dial up entries along with the Local area Connection and
Wireless.
