I have XP Pro SP2. This problem has recently started happening.

I am behind a proxy which is configured in IE 6. (Connections - LAN
settings - Advanced). I have tried just about everything suggested in
this group - proxycfg etc. - and nothing works.

The Windows update log shows:

2007-07-13 11:30:44:087 1368 63c Misc WARNING: WinHttp:
SendRequestUsingProxy failed for <http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6/

If I try and access the URL above:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...ir/muredir.cab

in IE, it works fine.

I've tried the solutions in this newsgroup e.g. Windowsupdate behind proxy.

>From the article:

Internet Explorer is used to access the Windows Update Web site?

Yes

Method 3: Internet Explorer is configured by using a user-defined
proxy server value

Yes

proxycfg shows:

C:\>proxycfg
Microsoft (R) WinHTTP Default Proxy Configuration Tool
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Current WinHTTP proxy settings under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
\Connections\
WinHttpSettings :

Direct access (no proxy server).

C:\>

Note. The article states "If you use Internet Explorer to specify a
proxy server, the results of the proxycfg.exe command should indicate
a value of Direct access (no proxy server).

True.

My bypass proxy settings are:

http://*.update.microsoft.com*;
https://*.update.microsoft.com*;
http://download.windowsupdate.com*;

Also, these logs may help?

Which proxy? Are you aware that ISA (for example) must be made
to allow anonymous connections to the MS update sites?

<title>You experience problems when you access the Windows Update
Version 5 or Version 6 Web site through a server that is running ISA Server</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885819

Your symptoms are consistent with the idea that your proxy is rejecting
(perhaps ignoring) the anonymous connections needed to download
using BITS. E.g. when you download manually the connection is clearly
identified by being done by you. Etc.

BTW please confirm that you can get the list of updates from either AU or WU.
Then you can at least download them manually and still be assured
that you are getting the corrrect versions in a timely manner.

HTH
