My windows XP home edition, which already had service pack 2 installed many
months ago, became damaged. I successfully repaired windows from my CD.
Windows Updates then successfully downloaded and installed 38 updates.
However, the last attempted update, service pack 2, failed almost at the end
of the installation process. I got the Windows File Protection message that
"files required for Windows to run properly have been replaced with
unrecognized versions, and Windows must restore the original versions. The
network location from which the files should be copied,
C:\Windows|ServicePackFiles\i386/controls.man is not available. Contact
System Admin. or reinsert SP2 source files now." Then I got Setup Error, "SP2
install did not complete". Can anyone help me? Thanks!

1. Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
2. In the Command Prompt window type: SFC /SCANNOW
and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD available.

After running SFC:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
System Information > View > System History
