XP SP2 slows down explorer my computer and closes control panel

I did a clean install of xp and sp2 on a fairly grunty system but still it
cases windows explorer/my computer to be extremely slow (like 5 mins) and if
I open control panel and dont instantly click on an icon it shuts down. If I
unistall sp2 all is wonderland. All Have raed so far is about cleaning up
system and freeing up resources, I am a network engineer (new) so I have done
most if not all of the logical things help!!!!!.
