XP SP2 is still optional after 4/12/2005, right?

As you know, there was an announcement on September 8th that as of
April 12, 2005 installation of SP2 for Windows XP will no longer be
blocked.
But this only applies to users who have Automatic Update turned ON,
correct?
In other words, those who do not want SP2 and have Automatic Update
turned OFF will not have to have SP2 forced upon them, will they?

Correct.
But this only applies if the tool referenced below is installed.
The date you mention is incorrect since Microsoft changed it a few
days ago.
The date is now 16 August 2005:

Microsoft will never force anybody to install service pack 2. If you don't
want it installed, do not leave auto update on.

I never suggested Microsoft would force anyone to install anything.
The purpose of the tool is to prevent the installation of SP-2 while
leaving Automatic Update on.
All other Critical Updates will be installed.
You solution of simply disabling AU does not work for those wanting
other Critical Updates.

Hi

The change was from 4 to 8 months (not 12) from August 16 2004, so the
blocking expires 16. April 2005.

No, 8 months from Aug. 16 2004, is Apr. 16, 2005, as the link states it is 8 months.

"Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 will be available for a period of 240 days (8 months) from August 16. At the end of this period, Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems."

Feel free to correct me here but I was under the impression that I can have
AU off and still manually update other critical patches without having to
use that block prog. Eg, you CAN disable AU and still get other updates.

Let me rephrase:
"You solution of simply disabling AU does not work for those wanting
other Critical Updates through Automatic Update."

Many businesses with a number of computers wanted this tool and it was
with them in mind this tool was developed.
The usefullness of this tool for the typical home user is often little
to none.

Hi

Yes, you can set AU to off in the Control Panel/Automatic Updates
and still use Windows Updates to do manual updates. What you can
not do is disable the Automatic Service in the services list and
still use Windows Updates.

In which I think is wrong, because under the v4 of WU, one could disable that service, and still get manual updates, by simply making a visit to WU, and then scanning. Now, unless AU (it is not called Automatic Service BTW), and Background Intelligent Services is on in services.msc, it won't allow scanning, or a check.

The problem I have with this is; it uses more system resources to have these services running, and WU does the scanning anyway when prompted by the user. So why it needs to be on is something I feel suspiciously about regarding this. I leave the services off, then turn them on when I want to check. I also get critical/security updates emails from MS to aid in keeping up to par.
