XP SP2 Uninstall mess

I allowed Windows Update to download and install Sp2. After installation I
was unable to access my Lucent Winmodem. Although everything else was fine, I
needed to get the modem running so eventually I removed Sp2 via add/remove
programs. Since then, back at Sp1 level, I have a memory leak in
svchost.exe, which appears to relate to the "netman" service (though it may
not - I can't be sure which of the many services sharing the svchost process
is the cause, but stopping "netman" had most effect on the leak). I have
ruled out virus/spyware, and my system was in excellent health before. I
would like to re-do Sp2 and have another go at the modem problem, but now
Windows Update won't work with an 0x800A01CE error during scanning!! This
code seems to have no entries on this board.

I'm despairing, and even as I type this my pagefile is growing.

I tried removign through Add/Remove and it didn't go
well. I suggest you use system restore to get back to a
restore point before before you installed SP2. You can
also download the SP2 file from microsoft and save it
(burn it to a CD is a good idea) instead of getting it
through Windows Update.
