XP SP2 Update with disc -- stuck at "inspecting your current configuration"

Anyone know what to do when you can't get past "Go"....

Q: Did you do proper precautions prior to running this important & mega-update? such as insuring to temporarily turning off startup programs? and insuring there is enough FREE space?

I am stuck at the same location from disk-don't know why it would matter but
I'm going to try the downloaded version. I will let you know of my results.

I have found additional information regarding my problem dont know if it will
help with yours but here it is.

The Windows Installer was not intializing in my case. For some very odd
reason the Windows Installer Service was pointing to an invalid directory
looking for msiexec.exe /v
-So check your services to make sure the Windows Installer Service is started.

Services is start run services.msc
