XP SP3 and windows scripting nightmare

I installed SP3 on XP Pro and discovered that scripting was broken
afterward. For instance the windows update web site would not display in IE
and other applications which require scripting (such as Secunia) were also
broken. So, I uninstalled SP3, re-registered wuauserv.dll and installed
Windows Scripting 5.7. After that scripting was working again I and was
able to download 88 security updates from the Windows Update. I
intentionally left IE7 out so I could install it separately, and after doing
so scripting is again broken. When I'm ready to face my XP box again I
guess I'll uninstall IE7 and see if I can get scripting working again. I
can do without IE7, but I'm wondering if the OS is irreparable at this
point.

How did you install WinXP SP3 in the first place (i.e., a clean install
using a CD with SP3 slipstreamed)?

How and when was IE7 first installed? Did you attempt a slipstream install
of it, too?

The original installation of XP Pro included SP2. IE7 was installed first
via the Windows Update site. SP3 was installed some time later from an
installer downloaded from the Microsoft website before it was offered on
Windows Update. The installation of SP3 completed without errors. I don't
use XP much (I dual boot XP & Vista) and when I do I usually use Firefox and
Opera so I only recently became aware of the scripting problem. When I
uninstalled SP3 through Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/ the system
reverted to IE6. Any suggestions to make the system functional will be
appreciated.

And when exactly was that? Sounds like you'd installed a beta or Release
Candidate build.

With IE7 already installed? That would NOT have happened if you'd installed
the final build of SP3 (and I have a hard time believing it happened with a
beta or Release Candidate build, too).

Did you install WinXP or Vista first? Is the WinXP partition hidden from
the Vista partition? (I can see all sorts of problems associated with a
dual-boot scenario.)

Well, I believe it was the final release of SP3 and not a beta or RC. The
CD with the installer is not at hand at the moment, but I'll check it later
and post identifying information.

Regarding dual-booting, I use System Commander not the Microsoft boot
loader. To avoid the problem with System Restore I have hidden the Vista
partition from XP.

I uninstalled IE7 last night and scripting is working again. All critical
updates are installed at the moment except SP3. There are some optional
updates that I will install one at a time and hopefully they will not break
anything. I would eventually like to install IE7 and SP3, so I'm open to
additional suggestions. This is my "test" OS though and I'll just format
the partition and start over at some point if there's no apparent solution.
Thanks for helping.

The fact remains that uninstalling SP3 would NOT have uninstalled IE6 if (1)
SP3 was the final release and (2) both SP3 and IE7 had been properly
installed.

Required reading IMHO before (re)installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Thanks for the links of detailed help. One last question; why do you
recommend not using "Automatic/Windows Update"? And is this only with
regard to IE7?

A1. Experience in the trenches: Users who install IE7 via AU/WU are not
likely to install it per Sandi's Tips, all of which I strongly recommend to
avoid "horked" installs.

A2. Yes, more or less. The same recommendation would apply to Win9x and
Win2K machines upgrading to IE6 SP1, and I'm pretty certain I will recommend
the same when IE8 (currently in Beta 1) is released for WinXP and higher.
