XP SP3 install: safe boot?

My XP SP2 (Pro/media center, but no media center active) runs fine, all
updates installed. I downloaded the SP3 iso image and burned the CD.

For installation, can I do a safe boot to minimize all the extraneous
"stuff" that loads on a normal boot, and install from there, or is there an
easy way to boot (reboot) to load a minimal system? Should I use my good
old StartupCop to set what system services start?
