xp sp3 installation failure

i've managed to install xp sp3 on my PC and one of my laptops but cannot get
it to install on my personal laptop. The error message is:

Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x80070017
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.
----
I've tried turning off my security s/w (avast) to no avail, and I can't find
any reference to this error code in any of the microsoft sites.

Can anyone help?

0x80070017 -2147024873 ERROR_CRC Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Files may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for
installation are available, and restart the installation.

Reboot into safe mºde (F-8)
- -- --

Clean up the system (clearing out all the Temp/Tmp folders, and included all
offline content, clearing the browser TIF, Delete Cookies , do a Disk
CleanUp.

Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in
the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

Empty user and system "temp" folders.

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste the below into the Open: line

%systemdrive%\temp
delete the contents of the %systemdrive%\temp folder .


%systemdrive%\%windir%\temp
delete the contents of the %systemdrive%\%windir%\temp folder


%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp
delete the contents of the %systemdrive%\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp folder

Perhaps some maintenance, try running the "chkdsk /r" command at the command

Check Disk or Chkdsk is disk error checking in VISTA. It can be used to
check for corruption and possibly repair errors and bad sectors on the hard
drive.

System File Checker (SFC) checks that all Vista files are where they should

Many thanks for your time and effort, Engel, but I'm afraid it proved to be
no use. I did all the required stuff in Safe Mode (the disk clean up took
around 3 hours!) and used CCleaner to clean all temp files, browser history
etc.

I'm not quite sure why you're pointing me to all the Vista pages as I'm
trying to update XP, so I haven't been able to do any of the ChkDsk checks.

Anyone else got any bright ideas? Still getting the same error message:

Dear TaurArian & Engel - thanks again for all your help. It appears that
running Check Disk, Scan Disk & Defrag has sorted out whatever problem
existed and now I have finally managed to install XP sp3 after nearly two
whole days of running various clean-up utilities. Whoopee !
