XP SP3 problems

I downloaded and installed XP SP3 four days ago. My PC hasn't worked
entirely correctly since. Automatic update reported the following on three
subsequent occasions:

"The following updates were not installed:

Office XP Service Pack 3

Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2008 (KB890830)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack
1 (KB928366)

Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP"

Later I read the following:

"Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed

Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that
doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem."

I tried to install the above three times without success.

I tried to use the Troubleshooter and found it to be useless.

I suspect that if there is a problem on my computer, SP3 put it there.

After the first occurrence of this, I reinstalled XP from scratch. It made
no difference.

Here is my Update History:

Office 2003 Update for Office 2003 (KB907417) Friday, May 09, 2008
Automatic Updates

Windows XP Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller Friday, May
09, 2008 Automatic Updates

Windows XP Realtek AC'97 Audio Friday, May 09, 2008 Automatic Updates
Office 2003 Update for Microsoft Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003
(KB949044) Friday, May 09, 2008 Automatic Updates

Windows XP Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Friday, May 09,
2008 Automatic Updates

Nothing is shown as having failed installation.

I'm out of ideas. Can someone help?

I've had the same problem on two computers; a Dell 690 and a Dell 4300 laptop.
I also re-formatted & re-installed the Win XP sp2 disk and then upgraded to
sp3. Same problem.

Problem then occured when I loaded IE 7! Previous time I unloaded IE 7 by
going into the IE 7 folder and manually selecting the unload. If you don't do
this then IE 7 does not remove all it's parts (see other posts on this).
This time I carefully loaded XP Sp3 and all was well until I again upgraded
into IE 7 and then BANG! Problem back.

Please note: I have dual boot systems. Problem is not there on VISTA so I
suspect Microsoft is simply ignoring the BUG. "Out with the old and in with
the new."

I have the same issue. I installed Windows XP Professional from an
SP2-integrated CD (downloaded from MSDN Subscriber downloads), then applied
the standalone SP3 install (~320MB EXE), then tried to run Windows update,
but it failed with error code 0x80004002.

Thanks for any help,
Dave

Please note that you should always start your own posting rather than hijacking someone
else's post - nevertheless -

0x80004002
Try the following:-

Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each one):-

net.exe stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Try WU again.

If that hasn't helped, then you may have to reinstall the Windows Update Agent.

A new version of the Windows Update Agent is available
