XP SP3 Update no longer works

Hi there,

the Windows/Microsoft Update on my XP machine no longer works. Its an XP
Home Edition - SP3 - German version. The error code is 0x80072EFD - acutally
this is the PC of my little brother and the last updates have been perfomred
automatically in September 2008.
All the work-around I could find here (3rd party firewall and virus scan,
adding microsoft update to the trusted sites, BITS Update, etc ...) did not
improve the situation.

I hope, you can help me as long as I stay with my family over the holidays.
I will be gone in a few days for several months and my family is not very
computer-literate ... though I depend on them having a working system to stay
in contact.

Error: 80072EFD = ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT
Translation: Cannot connect to the Internet server

You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows
