XP systems with .NET 2.0 installed: Alternative to the recent .NET3.5 SP1 and Family Updates

Since there is inadequate documentation from MS on the .NET 3.5 SP1 and
Family Update updates, especially for those running Windows XP with
*only* the .NET 2.0 Framework installed, I strongly urge those running
XP with .NET 2 installed to decline and hide the updates.

If it's not, instead, download and install .NET Framework 2.0 SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then download and install the update for .NET 2 SP2, KB958481:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-6450b0212565

Click the Download button next to NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe

For both SP2 and KB958481, *save* the download, do NOT run it from it's
present location.
Once the downloads complete, close *all* open browsers and programs.
Install .NET 2 SP2 *first* -
NetFx20SP2_x86.exe [ for x86 XP systems ]
NetFx20SP2_x64.exe [ for the few x64 XP systems ]

Once .NET 2 SP2 installs, install KB958481 [ NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe ]
As yet, there is no x64 KB958481 .

Doing the above will update .NET Framework 2 to SP2 and KB958481 will
install the fixes for .NET 2 SP2 that are addressed by .NET Framework
3.5 SP1.
