I have been watching the threads for Frank328 and JJCaldwell on Update just
hanging on the “Searching for updates” page. I have the same problem. I
have gone through Maurice’s steps to make sure my settings are correct, but
it did not work. I am running XP Pro and the last of my winupdate log are:

Hi Geoff,
The log appears to show bad downloads.
The following is the advised method of clearing the W U download folder, and you'll notice at top a "stop" of the automatic update service, and at the end a re-start of it.

From main Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Retry Windows Update.

Hi Geoff,
This still has missing metadata / corrupted data.
Let's have you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. Follow the steps at this link at MS W U Troubleshooter.

I am having this same problem and tried to follow your tiny url link, but it
appears to be broken. Can you please repost the working link for me.
Thanks!

Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder also solved my Vista Ultimate
problem where windows Update would hang and svchost.exe would use all
available CPU (IE 50% on a dual core CPU). I had that problem since May 30
this year and finally found this to be a solution when MS knowledgebase
articles only referred to solutions for XP.

I am trying to update my windows XP to SP2 but have the same problem as
Geoff, when I click on "Express" to install it, IE hangs forever on "checking
your computer for updates".

I've followed all Maurice's steps in this and anothr thread and still have
the same problem. Have removed all spyware I could find with adaware 2007,
spybot search & destroy, ccleaner... can't use windows defender as suggested,
because you need SP2 to download that!

I was just trying to speed up my decelerating computer but now have an even
slower machine...
