ahoy.

Just over a year ago I bought a computer with xp home software included. I
am VERY new to this and would like some help on
1. What is xp service pack 1 (and 2)?
2. Do I need to download them ?
3. Will they mess up my system (as an update did to my last computer)
4. How can I turn OFF windows messenger, which tries to sign me in
automatically every time I log on??

Help!

Thanks
MGM

Major upgrades to the OS that include security patches and additional
updates.

Only SP2. You can get it free too:

Maybe...

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2:

Open it from the notification area, open the options (click cancel when it
asks about setting up a passport) and tell it to not run automatically when
Windows starts.

1. Service Packs are major updates normally including all previous updates
and other improvements.
2. You should probably install Service Packs as they become available.
3. Possibly, but the possibility is far less on a well maintained computer:

Nothing can guarantee success with any change.
All problems, known and unknown, should be resolved beforehand unless the
update/patch is specifically designed to resolve that issue.
4. Open MSN Messenger, Tools/Options/General
