I have successfully installed this update at least 10 times. Each time it
says it is successful but my automatic update warning keeps reappearing and
telling me to install.

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...b-dc23923d09e7

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB929338-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.

That's cause of the AU client needs some time to check that the
update is already installed. If you don't wanna wait for the
message to disapear magically (after having installed the update
manually with parameter "/o"), you may want to visit the Windows/
Microsoft Update site with Internet Explorer:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Make sure you're using the "Userdefined Search" this time.

Bye,
Freudi

And you've tried installing KB929338 manually via parameter "/o"
first before following the above? Please see the earlier posts in
this thread.

Windows Live OneCare virus program will cancel this Windows Update install. Turn off OneCare.

Beware this update KB929338 is causing preventing my laptop from booting up. I had to rollback.

I know, I'm oldfashioned, but my advise has ever been und will ever
be to disable *all* applications running *before* installing any
update.

No repro what so ever. Did you install KB929338 with parameter /o?

I downloaded and saved KB929338 as instructed in earlier post. Installed it
as instructed. That was about 24 hours ago and the install shield has not
appeared since then. HOWEVER, IE crashes so often that I could not even get
to this site to post the results of my effort. I did System Restore and here
I am with no apparent problem with IE crashing. The Install Shield just
appeared.
So, the work around worked to solve the Install Shield problem but casused a
problem with IE. that's IE7.
