XP Update redux

I have been searching the groups for a solution to my problem and have found
many possibilities but no successes!

The problem being: WinXP won't update. I tried the long string of "regsvr32
/s ...." items posted by dak on 06/29/2005. That didn't work.

I tried the suggestions posted by TaurArian [MS - MVP] on 10/12/2006. One
of the things suggested there was to use services.msc to stop Automatic
Updates. I started services.msc and found Automatic Updates but it reports
"Starting" not "Started" or "Stopped." Hence, all the actions I could take
on it are greyed out!!

How may I repair this short of reinstalling Win XP?

Regards,
Turner

NB: kellys-korner-xp.com and associated websites have been temporarily
"lost" and are being hosted by another owner right now.

Do NOT use any kellys-korner links right now. Do NOT click on any links on
the current kellys-korner page! Do NOT click on any links in a pop-up you
may get at kellys-korner!

Disregard due to problems with Kelly's site.

Instead try:-

Go to START, Select RUN
Type: regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Press Ok

If necessary to reinstall the update service -

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page" error message when you try to install an update
