XP Update Woes

Installed update as encouraged to do to keep my elderly pc "safe". It became
completely "safe" as I couldn't do anything with it due to it continually
rebooting.

As I have a full copy of XP on disc, I reinstalled it several times
yesterday and fully formatted the disc. On each occasion the system worked
great until I tried to download updates that hadn't caused any problems in
the past then it started to continually reboot.

I have now reached the stage of disabling all updates and am now running an
unrefreshed version of XP with IE6 browser and various other external
security products to keep me safe...hopefully.

This updateis the crappiest thing I have ever downloaded and you should be
ashamed of yourselves for foisting this thing on customers via your auto
update feature.

Perhaps this is to encourage formerly happy XP users to move to Vista :-((

I wonder how you propose to compensate users for all the hassles this update
has caused?

Hi there,

Have Sp3 installed on 4 machines and running just fine, 3 AMD and one intel
based system.

I assume you are running on a AMD cpu?

If so check here:

Continual reboots or can only boot into Safe Mode after installing WinXP
SP3?

Workarounds:

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.

2. After booting into Safe Mode:

Start | Run | (copy/paste) sc config intelppm start= disabled | OK | Reboot
into normal (Windows) mode.

• You receive a “Stop 0x0000007E” error message after you upgrade to Windows
XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer
