XP Updates Dead

I had to start from scratch with my mfgr's recovery disks because of a
failed audio card installation. When I went to the update site, it simply
stalled when it should have been examining my system.

I tried activating BITS as described by Pat Walters [MSFT] (it had been
inactive)
I downloaded the support tool from
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;838079 and ran
BITSADMIN /UTIL /REPAIRSERVICE /FORCE as described by George (it ran)
Finally, I manually downloaded and installed SP2 as described by Taurarian.
(it installed)

Now, with SP2 and BITS activated amd BITSADMIN forced, I still get a dead
screen at windows update. How can I get updates manually until I find a fix
for this?

Thanks,

Paul Vodola

"Paul Vodola",

I am sorry that you hit this particular issue. I will help you with your
request here and then ask you for something to help with the ongoing issue.

To get the latest patches now for your system, you should get the Microsoft
Baseline Security Analyzer and download using that tool. Here is the link:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...SASetup-EN.msi

BEFORE you do that, though, please open your Windows Update log, and reply
back to this thread with the last error you see in the log. Here is that
procedure:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. type: notepad %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
4. Click OK

Now, to find the error:
1. Scroll to the bottom of the log and click there, or press <CTRL> and the
<End> key to take the cursor to the bottom.
2. Press <CTRL> and then F for Find, and search for 0x, *making sure* that
your click the Up radio button so that the scan moves backward through the
log.
3. Copy the whole line, or perhaps more lines that will let you know the
context of the error.
4. Paste this information into your reply to this newsgroup posting.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I appreciate Pat Walters' response. I wrote to MS Updates ("Visit the
Windows Update Support Center" under Help and Support) and got a response.
Their first suggestion, re-registering components, worked. Here is their
complete response in case it helps others.

Paul Vodola

Suggestion 1. Re-register Windows Update components

=============================

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.

2. In the opened window, run the following commands:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll

regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 atl.dll

regsvr32 wucltui.dll

regsvr32 wups.dll

Please check if you receive any error when trying to re-register these
components. If not, please try to visit the Windows Update site again.

Suggestion 2. Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.

================================================

This behavior can also occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update
contains corrupted files. In this situation, we can resolve this problem by
following the steps below.

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.

4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net start WuAuServ

Please try the above and provide me with the results at your earliest
convenience. If anything in my email is unclear or you need further help,
don't hesitate to let me know.

If the issue persists, to provide more effective support, please assist me
in collecting the following information.

1. Please capture a screenshot when you encounter an error message:

1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.

2) Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.

3) In Paint, click Paste under the Edit menu, click Save under the File
menu, type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as type", and
click Save. 2. Please send me the "WindowsUpdate.log" file for further
research.

The file is located in C:\WINDOWS (assuming the system drive is C.

3. Please collect the System Information for me.

1) Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools,
and click System Information.

2) On the popup window, on the menu bar, click File, click Save to save it
as an NFO file.
