I appreciate Pat Walters' response. I wrote to MS Updates ("Visit the
Windows Update Support Center" under Help and Support) and got a response.
Their first suggestion, re-registering components, worked. Here is their
complete response in case it helps others.
Paul Vodola
Suggestion 1. Re-register Windows Update components
=============================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. In the opened window, run the following commands:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
Please check if you receive any error when trying to re-register these
components. If not, please try to visit the Windows Update site again.
Suggestion 2. Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
================================================
This behavior can also occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update
contains corrupted files. In this situation, we can resolve this problem by
following the steps below.
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.
net stop WuAuServ
2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.
net start WuAuServ
Please try the above and provide me with the results at your earliest
convenience. If anything in my email is unclear or you need further help,
don't hesitate to let me know.
If the issue persists, to provide more effective support, please assist me
in collecting the following information.
1. Please capture a screenshot when you encounter an error message:
1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2) Click Start, click Run, type MSPAINT, and click OK.
3) In Paint, click Paste under the Edit menu, click Save under the File
menu, type a file name for the snap shot, choose JPEG as "Save as type", and
click Save. 2. Please send me the "WindowsUpdate.log" file for further
research.
The file is located in C:\WINDOWS (assuming the system drive is C

.
3. Please collect the System Information for me.
1) Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools,
and click System Information.
2) On the popup window, on the menu bar, click File, click Save to save it
as an NFO file.
