Over the last 2 weeks I have run into 7 systems (4 in one location) that have
problems with the automatic installation of updates when you choose to shut
down the PC rather than doing a restart. When the pc goes to shutdown it will
go to the screen with the installing updates and Your machine will shut down
automatically when the updates are installed. The PC never progresses beyond
the 1 of 3 or 1 of 9 updates being installed screen, even if left on for
hours.
Can't find any info that isn't several years old and out of date on this. As
I said, it has only cropped up with the last batch of updates in April

I wanted to add that I discovered the same thing this morning on my XP
box. I shut down the system after downloading (but not yet
installing) the latest batch of updates last night (May 9, 2007) and
came back this morning to find that it had frozen on Installing update
1 of 9.

My Dell XP laptop took a REALLY long time to install those updates.

Yup. I made the mistake of enabling this update mode on one of my systems.
It literally took several hours for the updates to install. In the meantime
the system appeared to hang for a long time, put up a fresh message saying
that it was installing updates, and proceed to appear to hang again. I
finally gave up on that machine for a day and the next day it was working.
