XP Validation Failure

I am updating a genuine XP Home version to a genuine XP Pro. I know it is
genuine as I purchased it from an authorized vendor and took it out of a
cellophane wrapped Microsoft box and all the tamperproof certificates are
attached to the package and holograms on the disk. At the end of the
installation I get an error msg "The instruction at "0x7726381c" referenced
at memory "0x00000000" could not be written. Click OK to terminate. Click
Cancel to debug." I click debug and the dialog box goes away. Then, when I
try to activate windows, I get an "Microsoft Out-of-Box Experience" message
that the program has to close. I haven't seen any other references to this
problem, but I'd sure like to hear from anyone who has an idea about what to
do next.

From Google:

And perhaps IE7 might have been the cause:

Are you /upgrading/ from XP Home to Pro? Are you using a full Retail
Version of WinXP Pro or an upgrade version?

Since the issue has nothing to do with Windows /Update/, I think you'd be
better off posting to WinXP General newsgroup instead of this one, Mark:

Thank you, and I'll do that. I had a difficult time trying to find the right
place to post.
