XP windows update doesn't work no error

I am running XP professional sp2 and neither windows update or automatic
updates work. I go to the update page and see the please wait while we
search for updates and it never comes back. The problem also existed before
I installed sp2, I had to download a copy on another machine to get it
installed.

This seems to be a fairly frequent occurrence. See above in this forum
"Windows update sticks..." on March 12. Might as well regroup and work this
out together.
