It's the screen is frozen in blue with white write writing:
"The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly
with a status of 0xc000026c (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been
shut down."

My wife said she initiated some kind of an update?? I can't even reboot in
safe mode. Every time I reboot, it returns to this error message and no key
affects any start up process.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

Was it a device driver?

<title>A Stop: 0xc000026C or Stop: 0xc0000221 "Unable to Load Device Driver" Error Occurs When You Start Windows XP</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315241

(Live Search for
0xc000026c site:support.microsoft.com

You probably need to roll back the driver update.

BTW WU newsgroup is not the best place to be looking for help
with this symptom. Cross-posting to an XP NG for convenience.

Good luck

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms797159.aspx

This occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode
subsystem, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem (CSRSS),
is compromised. Security can no longer be guaranteed. Because Win XP can't
run without Winlogon or CSRSS, this is one of the few situations where the
failure of a user-mode service can cause the system to stop responding. This
Stop message also can occur as a result of malware infestation or when the
computer is restarted after a system administrator has modified permissions
so that the SYSTEM account no longer has adequate permissions to access
system files and folders.

There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection (unrelated to any Windows Updates or Automatic Updates
functionality, other than the fact that they probably don't work now).

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
