XP won't run updates

Every time I go to the update.microsoft.com site and tell it to check
for updates it says it needs to install some missing files. I click
on the button to install them. It says it has installed them and
tries to update but goes right back to the same "missing files"
screen. I have no clue what is causing this because last week it
worked just fine. Help please.

Oh yes, it's the updating software that won't install. Which btw I
downloaded and installed manually and I still get this message.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)
