xp2 won't install

When I try to install xp2 from cd it hangs immediately. If I try to install
from update it hangs up at backing up registry. Help?

Had the same issue with my machine....found out that my BOIS is old enough
that it doesn't play with XP SP2. Started up in safe mode and picked a
restore date prior to my SP upgrade. That got me running again and i
uninstalled SP2.. There is an update that may address this...(KB88526).
This update must be done prior to the SP2 upgrade. Or you can upgrade your
BOIS and reap additional rewards above and beyond being able to run SP2. I
am still at the top of SP1..until such time that I upgrade my Bios...about 70
bucks..thru esupport...I don't particularly trust that the KB patch will fix
my machine. If your machine is past the point of starting in safe
mode.....you may have to ...reinstall from your original disk...and ...start
....all over....again.
At one point or the other...check out a bios upgrade...
