XPSP 2- blank screen on reboot

I installed XPSP 2 a couple of days ago when I reboot my machine -it goes
through a disk check and then I get a blank screen- only when I stop the
check will windows come up. I went to a restore point before I installed SP
2- but it made no difference.

I'd appreciate any help- cause I have no idea why a Windows update should
actually screw my computer up.
