XPSP2 Post Installation Issues

In reading many of the threads on this page, they actually seem related in
one basic way: all are having trouble installing further updates, removal of
Windows updates, and XP functionality problems after installing XPSP2. After
installation, I too can no longer install any further Windows update.
Downloading the update works, but installation just stops working. I can not
uninstall XPSP2, because this process too just stops. I can not use System
Restore, because this process hangs up as well.

I have send 2 requests to Microsoft for help, but have not been answered.

Anyone have an idea what is going on or how to help?

Thank you!

On the Windows Update website there are specific instructions for preparing
your system for the installation of Service Pack 2. Among these are
defragging the hard drive, clearing the internet temp files and cache,
checking for malware and so on. Also recommended is disabling any
anti-virus applications before the installation. Check the details on the
website. Failure to properly prepare the system is the usual cause of the
problems many seem to suffer from.

As you may be aware, the installation of SP2 is not now, nor has it ever
been required. You can simply decline to install the update but keep
installing the various critical updates on a sort of ala carte basis.

After I chose to have SP2 installed (after my system was fully prepared),
virtually every program began displaying error messages and denying me access
(Norton, Word, documents, etc.) and I kept getting dialogue boxes that my
scanner was trying to load! Two hundred dollars later, the tech that fixed my
system said that SP2 screws a lot of systems and that I should never download
SP2.

If you completed all the pre install suggestions before SP2 upgrade as I did
only some windows updates would not install. I have a workaround not a fix
cause I
had the same problems. I have XPPro SP2 installed and found some updates not
working. My guess is that the install is stopped because restore can't
complete before installing the update. you can check this by trying to
manually create a restore point, be sure to name it. to enable the installs
Start run msconfig and on the services tab scroll to IISadmin and uncheck it,
click apply, close restart. after restart you may see dialogs click ok and
exit no restart. go to winupdate site and try again. it worked for me. be
sure to go back and recheck the IISadmin in the msconfig services tab. your
situation may need it.

Find a competent tech who will put your computer safety and security
before his convenience.
The techs statement about SP-2 is way to broad.

Properly preparing the computer goes a long way to preventing problems
but nothing can guarantee success.
Since there is a large number of Windows XP computers in the world and
no two are identical it is impossible to guarantee success on all of
them.

There is no software problem that should cost $200, and no hardware
failures are caused by SP-2.
Proper back-ups can leave the option of rebuilding Windows available
and should cost far less than what you paid.

Next time you have computer problems, find a competent tech that is
interested in more than just your money.

Thank you. Your reply has given me a couple of options to try. I too
followed the checklist and have installed the SP2 on about 10 computers.
This is the only one on which I have experienced problems. Hopefully, this
workaround will work, as this too is an XPPro machine running IIS.

Kevin, your reply was not helpful. You have assumed my problems are because
I did not follow the checklist. I did indeed do all these things, and have
installed SP2 on about 10 computers. This computer is the only one that is
having problems. My request was for assistance after installation, as I do
want to install SP2, but since I can not remove the failed installation, I do
not see how you expected your post to be of any assistance.

"pligon",

I would like to help, and I have a specific request:
Could you please open your Windows Update log and post the
lines related to one of the installations that failed
AFTER your installation of Windows XP SP2? I will do my
best to help you further.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
