Yellow Icon in Task Bar disappears

When I get the yellow icon in the task bar telling me that updates are
available and click it to download updates, nothing happens. The icon
disappears. I've looked at the log file and see no errors reported either.
It used to work before and works fine this way on another machine (both
machines running SP2 and with the same firewall and anti-virus software and
very similar set-ups).

If I disable automatic updates using the control panel and re-enable it on
the problem machine, the yellow icon promptly appears again. I click on it
and it disappears again.

I can manually update and apply patches if I go to the Windows Update web
site. No problems. Curiously, when updates are downloaded manually, the
yellow icon pops-up again and tells me that updates are ready for download.

I've searched various web sites including Jupiter's, but have found nothing
that solves this problem.

Anyone experienced this and have a fix, please?

Is there a way to uninstall/re-install automatic updates in XP?

Thank you.

Zeb,

Thank you for responding. Because I was having some other problems with XP,
I did a repair install last night. This fixed the icon issue with Windows
Update as well.

Best.
