In Windows Update settings just change to "Do not notify me of any
updates...."

Hi;

That yellow icon is telling you that important updates are available.

I see you have now turned Off Windows Updates. Are you sure you want to do
that? Your system will need the Security updates provided. Unless you
intend to carefully and regularly update the system yourself, I suggest you
leave Automatic Updates turned on and active.

For security updates it's not too difficult to do it yourself if you
subscribe to MS e-mail security advisories and the monthly advanced
notification and summary.

Hi, Tom;

Yep, I know. It is just that way too many folks start out with the best of
intentions for always grabbing those security updates, and then tend to
forget until something goes down the tubes. That's why MS keeps making it
harder to turn that off.<g>

I too understand your concern: it was terrifying today! I had to restart
about 4 times my pc due to those "silent" updates with the yellow shield. I
have indeed the automatic updates on, but now and then it is nerve wrecking.
When I am fed up with it I hide it in the system tray via properties. I wrote
"silent" because indeed you can go on working while downloading & installing
the update, but after that you always see a message to restart to have the
updates in effect. I would prefer ONE way for the automatic updates: the one
that shows when I close before sleeping; updating before closing down. That's
the most practicle. I can hardly believe updates are that urgent that we have
to be disturbed during the day by frequent restarts.
But I have another question about it: the sign of an update is ALSO the blue
globe with the MS flag four colors above it. I prefer that sign and there was
a time I did not trust that yellow shield! (maybe viruses I thought). Why
cannot MS consequently use one and only one icon for the updates?
