Yesterday I installed the new critical updates and all hell has broken loose.
Anytime I try launch any app it takes about 10 minutes to open and the "cpu
usage" is at 100% almost all the time. I have tried to run a virus scan to
which nothing showed up. I have tried to do a system restore and had no luck.
I tried to run it in safe mode and it runs fine. I have no idea where the
updates are being installed to, they used to show up in the "add/remove
programs" area and they are not there. I have checked for spyware and nothing
there either. Someone please help I have been working on this issue for about
15 hours and have found nothing that stands out.

I'm now seeing the same high CPU usage (50 to 100%) when running virus
checkers (McAfee VirusScan 7, Spybot, Yahoo AntiSpy, McAfee AntiSpyware), and
sometimes while trying to change webpages in Internet Explorer.

Here are the updates that were automatically installed yesterday:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2005 (KB890830)
Successful Wednesday, February 09, 2005 Automatic Updates
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250) Successful Wednesday, February 09,
2005 Automatic Updates
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888113) Successful Wednesday, February 09,
2005 Automatic Updates
Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472) Successful Wednesday,
February 09, 2005 Automatic Updates
Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781) Successful Wednesday, February 09,
2005 Automatic Updates
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB867282)
Successful Wednesday, February 09, 2005 Automatic Updates
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873333) Successful Wednesday, February 09,
2005 Automatic Updates
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890047) Successful Wednesday, February 09,

Well its been another day of working on this machine only to get nowhere, I
have tried everything i can think of and still the machine is running
extremely slow, every time the small thing happens on the machine such as
outlook checking for new mail the CPU usage is @ 100% and just hangs there. I
thought it might be an Outlook issue so I ran a repair to outlook and still
the same issues. I was ready to do a reinstall of the OS only to find out I
cannot because the OS on the computer is newer then the disc (well no
kidding) Windoes will not let me install.

I also have gone through and uninstalled all the updates from yesterday and
that didnt help either but this problem started at the EXACT same time I
installed the updates yesterday.

I have never had a problem on a PC like this and I thought I had seen them
all, someone anyone please help!

Thank you!

Hey if it was truly a problem after installing updates , Go to system restore
and restore system back to prior updates and see what happens

For what it's worth, I tried restoring my computer to a pre-update
configuration (February 7) to see if it made any difference in the way
VirusScan runs. It didn't seem to. The CPU usage fluctuated but was still
around 90%. Does this rule out cause and effect between high CPU usage and
the latest Microsoft updates?

look at the task manager and see wats going on .

Thx, for the offer of help CJ!

But in a Windows Update thread entitled SP2@Auto Updates (9/11/2004), you
reportedly asked the forum:

CJ: How do I know if I have a 64bit processor?
CJ: How do I "clean boot"?

How can we be sure you qualified to help with this problem? I’m not saying
you’re not, I just want to establish baseline credentials.
