Yet Another Cannot Send problem

I bought the laptop with Vista and Microsoft mail a week ago. At first the
mail program worked fine, albeit slow. Now I cannot send email. No error
message appears; the mail just goes to the Outbox and stays there. My server
information is correct. (Pinetree Networks). I've tried to disable the
McCaffree virus scanner to no avail. Every time I open Mail it "processes"
each and every file.

Not sure where to go from here. Any other suggestions?

First I must state that I am not in anyway anti MS, and have been using Vista
for over 12mth, with a few minor problems, if read thru these MS groups you
will see that Windows Mail does appear to have a lot of problems.
A replacement for Windows Mail called Windows Live Mail is available, which
may be worth trying, it appears to operate better that WM.
Another alternative is Firefox browser and Thunderbird mail reader, both of
which I have used for several years, both with XP and now Vista.
What firewall are you running?
Doe McAfee indicate why you cannot disable E-Mail Scanner?

To disable MacAfee you will need to do the following.

You need to uninstall it completely from your system and then re-install it without the email integration. That is the only way you are able to disable you email scanning feature with MacAfee.

The best solution would be not to have it installed at all on your system because it causes too many issues and is not very compatible with WM or any other email client.

Get and install either the free AVG or Avast which work quite nicely with WM. Make sure that you uncheck the email integration at the time of install.

Bob,
Thank you for your insights. I will, most likely, look into a different mail
program. As for McAfee, disabling makes no difference and I'm hesitant to get
too involved with it because I'll probably switch to Norton before the McAfee
trial runs out. Interesting that even though I've supposedly disabled the
scanning, it continues to scan.
Windows provides the firewall, yes? I haven't seen any other names.

Norton is just as bad if not worse than MacAfee. These 2 AV suites you should stay away from

Thank you Peter,
This has been very enlightening. A lot of good advice from smart people.
Much appreciated!

I've got Vista and there is a great utility to help with mail getting stuck
in the outbox. Tom Koch's had posted a great fix for this: go to
http://www.oehelp.com/smutil/ and download the WMUtil Version 1.51 Updated
5/4/07 to your desktop. Since I've done this I haven't had any problems.
Instructions are on the website. Good luck!

Norton is as bad or maybe even worse.
Don't wait for the trial to run out since you are simply
risking further problems. Just get rid of McAfee
and install Avast which is free and is proving to be
a stable, trouble free alternative.

Hi, Mom.

Vista's Mail programs have been evolving so fast that it's hard to keep up.
When Vista debuted for the public in January, Windows Mail was included. By
May, many testers were using Windows Live Mail desktop beta (build
8.0.1226). But then, in late May, several names were changed and many of us
went to the new Windows Live Mail beta (build 12.0.1184), which is the most
current beta version as of today. But new machines and Vista software
packages still come with Windows Mail It is entirely possible to run both
the original Windows Mail (WM) and the new Windows Live Mail beta (WLM) at
the same time. (All that background is just in case you stumble over
confusingly-similar names in your research, and I haven't even mentioned
names that include Hotmail.)

The shortcut version of the cure is at MVP Steve Cochran's site, as you must
have seen, based on the "Yet Another..." part of your Subject:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/

Download WLMUtil and run it. Click Clear Outbox and follow the instructions
exactly.

If you still have problems, please post back and tell us, step by step, just
what you did and what results you saw. Simply "I tried it" and "Didn't
work" don't tell us anything. We need to know exactly what you tried and
how it didn't work.
